Abstract

  • In order to improve their maneuverability, long vehicles are often equipped with several steerable axles. Coordinated control of the steerable axles is usually realized through fixed patterns via so-called steering programs that function as a multi-axle steering system. These patterns, however, do not take advantage of the available degrees of freedom. In this paper, therefore, we will present developments that aimat providing an automated multi-axle steering systemfor articulated vehicles that has novel features, such as directional stability in lanes. The paper will deal with methods ranging from automated lane detection to lane guidance and optimal path planning. These components are essential prerequisites for the future automated driving of multi-axle steered vehicles, which will make them safer and also more efficient.
