Abstract

  • In the second part of the series, we adress marine bioluminescence. We explore the deep seas of the global oceans with their bioluminescent jellyfish, we embark to Japan onto the coast of Toyama Bay, where every year in late spring dinoflagellates and bioluminescent crabs create a shining spectacle. Finally, we will discover that even bacteria are capable of bioluminescence and that they use this ability together with other animals in symbiotic relationships. As in the first part, we will present the bioluminescence of the individual organisms in their historical, ecological, and geographical context and explain in detail the mechanisms of the chemical reactions involved.
