Abstract

  • This contribution analyses a geographical database of unfragmented areas in Saxony and adjoining regions with special attention to Saxony's borders. The result shows that environmental analyses of landscape fragmentation should be based on areas defined by natural borders instead of political frontiers, because in cross-border areas large unfragmented areas still exist. These unfragmented areas should be considered in regional planning and planning of infrastructure. The investigation of landscape fragmentation in the national park region Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland shows that a coherent consideration of large unfragmented areas across the frontiers is necessary for further protection and development.
