Abstract

  • Shell structures are suitable for covering large spans with little material. Nevertheless, a detailed optimization of the form with respect to the given boundary conditions is necessary. Furthermore, a holistic approach such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is needed, especially in the early design stages, where the potential for reducing the environmental footprint is greatest. The purpose of this paper is to improve the sustainability of shell structures by reducing the global warming potential (GWP). The method presented uses a graphical algorithm editor in combination with statics calculations and environmental analysis tools. We also discuss critically the application of the method to optimize a free-form roof structure and the savings this can achieve. Taking this into consideration, we then go on to discuss the advantages and further improvements by using adaptive materials.
