Abstract

  • The therapy of abomasal displacement is important in the buiatric practice. In a large dairy herd in Saxony, a total number of 487 abomasal displacements (AD) occurred from May 2007 to September 2011. The mean incidence rate of AD was 5.6 % per year. In 93.2 % of the cases, the abomasum was displaced to the left side (LAD). Cows during their third or fourth lactation and within the first 100 days in milk were affected most frequently. The predominant part of the cows with AD had concurrent diseases at the time of diagnosis, most frequently metritis in cows with left abomasal displacement (LAD) or diseases of the claws in cows with right abomasal displace-ment (RAD). Seasonal differences in the occurrence of AD were not observed, but there was a significant difference in the number of AD per month between the years of observation. The AD was treated laparoscopically by abomasopexy in a standing position of the cow (approach of Christiansen). Six months after surgery, 72.9 % (LAD) and 59.4 % (RAD) of the treated cows, respectively, were still in the herd. Within three weeks after the treatment, 2.7 % of the surviving cows developed a recurrent AD and another 3.9 % later in the same lactation. 12.2 % of the cows who calved again, a relapse of AD was observed in the subsequent lactation, and in 13.9 % in a later lactation. The laparoscopic abomasopexy is a suitable tool in the treatment of AD in large dairy farms, which can be performed with satisfying results and without large personnel expenditure.
