Abstract

  • Welding old mild steels - an option for the repair of existing structures
When repairing or reinforcing existing structures made of mild steel, bolting or riveting are usually the preferred joining methods. In many cases, however, it is more favourable to use welding as the joining method for design reasons. Due to the special properties of old mild steels, particular problems have to be taken into account when welding. The weldability of mild steels is impaired by their inhomogeneous microstructure with strongly scattering chemical composition, impurities and inclusions, segregations and by their limited material toughness.
In the context of research projects at the Dresden University of Applied Sciences, proven principles for welding old mild steels have been developed, which include the testing of various welding filler materials and processes as well as the purposeful control of the process parameters. The following publication presents the results of the extensive experimental and analytical investigations into the weldability of old mild steels. Finally, first practical applications of the findings are reported on the rehabilitation of two steel bridges.
