Lately, scientists and researchers around the world are endeavoring to develop solutions for the practical urban production of high quality fresh foods. Modern soilless cultivation methods have an extremely high potential for lowering the cost of production. In comparison to open field production, up to 90% of the used water can be saved in closed circuit production. The closed circuit technology also prevents the costly released of fertilizers into the environment. The cultivation in a building provides an environment protected from unfavorable weather. In this way, a secure domestic year-round production can be guaranteed. The costly transport of products from the most remote areas of other countries can be avoided. Additionally, growing in a vertical dimension increases the available production surface area by many times, thereby increasing productivity per ground unit of area. Nevertheless, based on early indoor conversion experiments, a high degree of research and development is still needed to come up with a profitable solution for the market. In particular, the high technical complexities, as well as the high energy cost of the first testing facilities, are to be regarded as a special challenge. In this comprehensive structured research and development project, Brick Born Farming – Indoor food production in urban areas, various aspects will be further developed and linked. Here, the main areas are briefly explained.
