  • Polylactides (polylactic acid -PLA) are bio-based, biocompatible and biodegradable synthetic polymers that are used in many applications such as packaging materials, medical devices, etc.

    Their low heat resistance temperature and flame resistance limits their wider

    application. This cooperative doctorate between the Institute for Lightweight

    Construction and Polymer Processing of the TU Dresden and the HTW Dresden aims to

    overcome the above-mentioned disadvantages by using electron beam treatment and

    a bio-based flame retardant. Finally, the electron beam modified PLA with

    enhanced flame retardant properties will be comprehensively tested for 3D

    printing.
